Unto Others: What Does Jesus Actually Mean by the Golden Rule?
By nature, we want to treat others the way they treat us. But Jesus calls us to something far greater—something that transforms us and points others to Him.
What Does It Really Mean to “Treat Others the Way You Want to Be Treated”?
We’ve all heard it: The Golden Rule. But the world often flips that around. Instead of “treat others the way you want to be treated,” our instincts tell us, “Treat others the way they treat you.” It feels fair. It feels natural. But Jesus offers us a higher way—a better way.
In Luke 6:27–36, Jesus outlines what it means to love like He does. Not just loving those who love us back, but loving the ones who misunderstand us, mistreat us, and even try to hurt us.
“But I say to you who hear, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.” – Luke 6:27-28 (NASB95)
Let’s be honest—this isn’t easy. But it is possible. Here’s how.
What Is Agape Love and Why Does It Matter?
In English, we only have one word for love, but in Greek, there are several. Jesus uses agape, the highest form of love. It’s unconditional, selfless, and sacrificial. Agape love doesn’t wait to be earned. It gives, even when it hurts. It blesses, even when it’s not returned. It’s the kind of love Jesus poured out on the cross and the same love He calls us to live out daily.
How Can I Actually Love My Enemies?
Jesus makes it practical with three commands:
Do good to those who hate you.
Bless those who curse you.
Pray for those who mistreat you.
These aren’t one-time actions. They’re ongoing, continual behaviors. This love isn’t based on emotion. It’s a decision, a discipline, and a daily choice to live differently.
Why Is This So Hard?
Because everything in our culture tells us to retaliate. But Proverbs 14:12 warns us, “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.” We’ve been discipled by the world’s way. Jesus invites us into the upside-down Kingdom—a way that feels unnatural but leads to life.
So How Do I Live This Out?
Here are three steps to help you live “unto others” the Jesus way:
1. Commit Your Will
This kind of love won’t happen by accident. You have to pre-decide how you’ll respond when conflict comes. Don’t wait for the heat of the moment. Ask yourself now: What kind of person do I want to be?
2. Rely on the Holy Spirit
You can’t do this alone—and you don’t have to. Galatians 5 tells us the fruit of the Spirit is love, patience, kindness, and self-control. Ask Him daily to fill you, guide you, and empower you to respond with grace.
3. See People Through God’s Eyes
Your enemy isn’t just your enemy. They are someone made in the image of God. Someone Jesus died for. Someone who needs grace—just like you and me. When we shift our perspective, we shift our response.
What If We All Chose Love?
Imagine a world where followers of Jesus lived this way—loving radically, giving generously, and extending mercy when it doesn’t make sense.
Jesus says when we love like this, “your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He Himself is kind to ungrateful and evil men” (Luke 6:35). Let’s be known for more than our opinions or positions. Let’s be known by our love.
