Men on a Mission: What is Jesus Calling Us to Today?
Have you ever faced a decision so important that you knew it would change everything? In Luke 6, we find Jesus at exactly that kind of moment, preparing to choose the twelve men who would walk closest with Him and carry His mission to the world.
This isn’t just a story about ancient history. It’s a story that speaks into our lives today. It’s about how we seek God’s guidance, how He calls ordinary people, and how we are invited to live on mission right where we are.
Why Did Jesus Spend the Night in Prayer?
Before making this life-changing decision, Jesus “went off to the mountain to pray” and spent the entire night in communion with His Father (Luke 6:12).
It’s a striking reminder: if Jesus Himself needed to seek the Father before His next step, how much more do we?
In a world that prizes hurry and hustle, Jesus invites us to slow down. To seek, listen, and trust God’s voice. Do you have a space — a rhythm — where you meet with Him? It’s not about being perfect; it’s about building a relationship.
Why These Twelve?
From many followers, Jesus chose twelve ordinary men: fishermen, a tax collector, and a zealot. They didn’t have perfect resumes, but Jesus called them friends, disciples, and apostles. They would learn from Him, walk beside Him, and eventually be sent to share the Good News.
It’s a beautiful truth: Jesus still calls ordinary people today. People like you and me. Willing hearts matter more than perfect qualifications.
How Do We Live This Out Today?
Jesus models a rhythm we’re invited to follow:
Meet with Him — Stay connected. Prayer isn’t about performance; it’s about relationship. The enemy may whisper lies — “God isn’t listening,” “Your prayers don’t matter” — but Scripture reminds us that God delights when we draw near.
Be sent out — The mission continues. Right in your family, workplace, or community, you are uniquely positioned to reflect Christ’s love and hope.
What Is Your Next Step?
Here’s the personal question: Where is God calling you?
You don’t need to have it all figured out. Jesus didn’t choose the most polished people. He chose those who were willing to follow. Start by meeting with Him. And as you do, trust that He will lead you to live boldly on mission…wherever He’s placed you.
