What Does Jesus Says About Family?
Have you ever heard the phrase, “Blood is thicker than water”? What did you think it meant? Most of us assume it means family bonds are the strongest thing in life. But what if I told you the original meaning was very different?
The full proverb from the 12th century actually says, “The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb.” Could it be that chosen family, the ones who stand beside us in faith and commitment, is even stronger than biological ties?
That is exactly what Jesus points to in Luke 8:19–21. His mother and brothers wanted to see Him, but the crowd was too large. When someone told Jesus His family was waiting, what did He say? “My mother and my brothers are these who hear the word of God and do it.”
Why would He respond that way? Was He rejecting His family? Or was He inviting us into something greater?
What Does It Mean to Be in God’s Family?
What if family was never meant to be limited to biology? What if family was about belief and belonging? Jesus was not dismissing His mother or brothers. He was teaching that the family of God is built on obedience to His Word.
And here is the best part—do you know you are invited into that family?
How Do You Get a Seat at the Table?
Have you ever wondered if you come from the “right” background, have the “right” name, or measure up in the “right” ways? The truth is you do not have to. At the cross, everything changed. Jesus opened the door for you to be adopted by the Father. When you say yes to Him, you are given a new identity, a new inheritance, and a permanent place at the table.
Who Walks With You in This Family?
Think about it: who shows up when you need help? Who prays when you are hurting? Who steps in when life feels overwhelming? We see God’s family step in daily—through neighbors, church community, and people who choose to walk beside one another in faith. That is the beauty of belonging to God’s family.
What Does Obedience Have to Do With It?
Why does Jesus say His family are those who hear God’s Word and do it? Because obedience is the proof of intimacy. The more we listen to Him and follow Him, the closer we grow to His heart.
So here’s the real question: are you in the family? The invitation is open. No matter your past, no matter your story, Jesus says there is a place for you. And in His family, you are fully known, fully loved, and never alone.
