Who Holds the Power Over Life’s Storms?

What do you do when life feels out of control? When the storm clouds roll in—financial pressure, health struggles, broken relationships—where do you turn for peace?

History gives us an unlikely picture through the life of King Canute, known as Canute the Great. He was once the most powerful man on earth, ruling England, Denmark, Norway, parts of Sweden, and even exercising authority over Scotland. He united nations, stopped Viking raids, lowered heavy taxes, and built what became known as the North Sea Empire. Peace and prosperity followed under his leadership.

But strangely, King Canute is remembered most for a single act. He had his throne carried to the shore, set it down at the edge of the sea, and commanded the tide not to rise. The waves, of course, ignored him, washing over his royal robes and soaking the most powerful man alive.

Why would a king embarrass himself like that? Because he wanted to prove a point: his power, as mighty as it was, had limits. Only God commands the seas.

That truth comes alive again in the Gospel of Luke, where Jesus and His disciples set sail on the Sea of Galilee. A sudden, violent storm arose—waves crashed, winds howled, and even the most seasoned fishermen feared for their lives. In panic, they cried out to Jesus, “Master, we are perishing!”

Who Can Calm the Storms Around Us?

Jesus awoke, spoke a word, and the storm fell silent. The sea went from chaos to calm in an instant. The disciples, stunned, asked, “Who is this, that even the wind and waves obey Him?”

That’s the question every one of us must wrestle with. If even creation obeys Jesus, can He be trusted with the storms in your life?

What Storm Are You Facing Today?

Life brings challenges we cannot control. A diagnosis that isn’t favorable. A relationship that feels beyond repair. A future that feels uncertain. These storms leave us feeling small and powerless. And yet, they remind us of a greater truth: we are not in control, but we can know the One who is.

So, let me ask you: What storm are you facing today? What fear or doubt keeps you up at night? And most importantly—what measure of faith are you living with?

Will You Trust the One Who Holds It All?

Jesus isn’t just a teacher, healer, or miracle worker. He is the Lord over all creation. He sees you. He cares for you. And He is strong enough to hold you steady, even when the waves rise high.
