How To Fully Commit Your Life To Jesus
Have you ever agreed to something because of what you were going to get out of it? Maybe you attended an event because there was free food, volunteered because it came with a perk, or accepted an invitation because you knew it would benefit you in some way.
There's nothing particularly unusual about that. We make decisions based on what we value and what we hope to receive in return. But sometimes that same way of thinking can influence our relationship with God.
We may be willing to follow Jesus as long as life is going well, our plans are working out, or obedience doesn't require too much sacrifice. We want Him to guide our lives, but there may be certain areas we'd prefer to keep under our own control.
In Matthew 10:37–39, Jesus challenges His disciples to consider what wholehearted commitment really means. He explains that following Him requires a willingness to put Him above everything else, even when doing so comes at a cost.
If we want to grow in our commitment to Jesus, Scripture gives us three important principles to consider.
1. Put Jesus First in Every Area of Your Life
In Matthew 10:37, Jesus says that anyone who loves their father, mother, son, or daughter more than Him is not worthy of Him.
Those words can be difficult to understand at first. After all, Scripture consistently teaches us to love and care for our families. Jesus is emphasizing the importance of our priorities and asking us to consider where our greatest loyalty lies.
We all have things that compete for our attention and affection. Our careers, relationships, financial security, personal goals, and desire for comfort can gradually become the driving forces behind our decisions.
These things aren't necessarily wrong. Many are good gifts from God. But when something becomes more important to us than following Jesus, it can begin shaping our choices in ways that pull us away from Him.
Consider how you spend your time, what occupies your thoughts, and what influences your biggest decisions. Is there an area of your life where you've been hesitant to follow God's direction because you're afraid of what you might have to give up?
Putting Jesus first involves continually bringing those areas before Him and allowing His Word to shape our priorities.
2. Be Willing to Follow Jesus When It Costs You
In Matthew 10:38, Jesus tells His disciples that whoever does not take up their cross and follow Him is not worthy of Him.
For the people listening that day, the cross was a familiar symbol of suffering and death. They understood that Jesus was describing a commitment that could require tremendous sacrifice.
Throughout Christian history, believers have faced persecution, rejection, and even death because of their faith. While many of us may never experience those same circumstances, following Jesus still requires us to make difficult choices.
There may be moments when obedience means standing by biblical convictions even when others disagree. It may involve surrendering a personal ambition, changing a habit, or making a decision that feels uncomfortable because we believe it's what God is asking us to do.
Jesus continues in Matthew 10:39 by explaining that whoever loses their life for His sake will find it. He invites us to trust that the life He offers is worth more than anything we might sacrifice to follow Him.
That perspective changes how we approach commitment. When we understand what Jesus has done for us through His death and resurrection, we begin to recognize why He's worthy of our complete devotion.
3. Trust God Even When Life Doesn't Go as Planned
One of the clearest examples of wholehearted commitment appears in Daniel 3.
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego are commanded to bow before a golden statue. When they refuse, King Nebuchadnezzar threatens to throw them into a blazing furnace.
They believe God has the power to rescue them, but they also acknowledge that He may not deliver them in the way they hope.
In Daniel 3:18, they tell the king, "But even if He does not," they will not worship his gods.
Their faithfulness isn't dependent on a particular outcome. They trust God's power while remaining committed to Him regardless of what happens next.
That's a powerful example for our own lives. It's easy to trust God when our prayers are answered the way we hoped or when following Him leads to circumstances we enjoy. But what happens when the answer is different from what we expected?
Perhaps you're walking through a difficult season at work, waiting for a relationship to improve, or facing uncertainty about the future. You may believe God is able to change your circumstances while still wondering what you'll do if He doesn't.
Wholehearted commitment means continuing to trust His character and follow His direction through those uncertainties.
Take a moment to consider whether you've placed any conditions on your relationship with Jesus. Is there something you've been holding back because you're unsure what surrendering it might require?
You can begin by bringing that area honestly before God and asking Him to help you trust Him more deeply.
As we grow in our understanding of His love and faithfulness, we can begin replacing the conditions we've placed on our commitment with a willingness to follow Him even if life doesn't unfold the way we planned.
Reflect on Your Commitment
Is there an area of your life where something has gradually become more important than following Jesus?
What might wholehearted commitment to Christ require you to surrender or change in your everyday life?
How does the example of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego challenge the way you trust God when circumstances are uncertain?
A Prayer for Commitment
Father,
Thank You for loving me and sending Jesus to make a way for me to have a relationship with You. Help me understand the depth of that love and respond with a life fully committed to following You.
Show me where I've allowed other priorities, personal ambitions, or the desire for comfort to become more important than my relationship with You. Give me the courage to surrender the areas I've been holding back.
When following You requires sacrifice or life doesn't unfold the way I expected, remind me of Your faithfulness. Help me trust You even when I cannot see what comes next.
Teach me to follow Jesus wholeheartedly, without placing conditions on my obedience, and to find my greatest purpose and joy in You.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
