What's God's Bigger Purpose For Your Life?

There are seasons in life when the options in front of you feel impossible. A decision has to be made, but every direction feels heavy. You pray, think, wait, and still feel unsure how things could possibly work out.

That tension sits underneath the opening of Exodus 2.

God’s people had spent generations in Egypt, and fear had taken hold of Pharaoh. As the Israelite population grew, Pharaoh responded with cruelty and control. He ordered that every Hebrew baby boy be thrown into the Nile River. What should have been a season filled with joy and anticipation became marked by anxiety and grief.

Then a woman gives birth to one of the most significant names in Scripture: Moses.

But before he becomes a leader, a deliverer, or the man who parts the Red Sea, he is simply a baby placed into the hands of a mother trying to trust God in a frightening moment.

And through this story, we see something important about the way God works. He is present in the details we can see and in the future we cannot.

How Does God Work When Life Feels Impossible?

Moses’ mother finds herself in an unimaginable position. Pharaoh’s decree leaves her with no safe option. If she hides her son and is discovered, both of their lives are at risk. If she obeys Pharaoh’s command without resistance, she loses her child.

For three months she hides him, doing everything she can to protect him. Eventually she reaches the point where she can no longer keep him concealed. So she places him in a basket covered with tar and pitch and sets it among the reeds along the Nile.

What happens next is remarkable.

Pharaoh’s daughter comes to the river, notices the basket, and discovers the crying baby inside. Instead of responding with indifference, she responds with compassion. Then, through a series of providential moments, Moses’ own mother is brought back into the story and entrusted with caring for her son.

Not only is the baby spared, but the family remains connected. Moses’ mother is even paid to raise him.

The story reminds us that God is able to create possibilities we would never think to look for on our own. What seemed trapped between loss and fear suddenly opened into something entirely different.

There are moments when life feels narrowed down to bad outcomes and disappointing choices. Exodus 2 reminds us that God is not limited by the options we can currently see. His presence opens doors we would never know to look for.

Does God Care About Little Details?

Many people read this passage with their focus entirely on the rescue of one child, and understandably so. The emotional weight of the story pulls us into the moment. A mother risks everything to save her son, and God protects him.

But when we zoom out, we begin to see something larger unfolding.

This child will eventually stand before Pharaoh and demand freedom for God’s people. He will lead Israel out of slavery, walk through the Red Sea on dry ground, and receive the Law from God on Mount Sinai. Through Moses, God will shape an entire nation.

That perspective changes the way we read Exodus 2.

God is not only preserving a baby. He is preparing a future leader. The rescue in the basket is connected to a much larger story that has not unfolded yet.

That is often how God works in our lives as well. We usually experience life in the immediate moment. We see the pressure, the uncertainty, the decision in front of us. God sees further than we do. He sees what today is connected to years from now.

For example, newborn babies are only able to see a short distance in front of them. Even though their vision is limited, they are still secure because they are held by someone who sees clearly.

Faith works much the same way.

There are seasons when we cannot see far ahead. We do not understand why things are unfolding the way they are. Yet the story of Moses reminds us that limited vision does not mean God is absent. He is still present in the details while also working toward purposes we cannot yet see.

Are You Living On Purpose?

One of the most personal moments in this story is the role of Moses’ mother. Scripture does not tell us much about her life, but what we do see reveals tremendous courage and wisdom. Her faith shaped the beginning of Moses’ story long before he ever stood before kings or led a nation.

Moses’ mother probably had no idea how significant her son’s future would become. Yet her faithfulness mattered deeply in the formation of the man he would grow into.

There are people in your life right now who may be shaped by your faithfulness more than you realize. There are assignments hidden inside ordinary moments. The conversations, encouragement, patience, and wisdom you offer today may become part of someone else’s future story tomorrow.

God knows who He has placed where, and He does not make those decisions carelessly.

Reflect On Your Purpose:

  1. Where in your life do you feel stuck between difficult or uncertain options right now?

  2. How does Moses’ story challenge the way you think about God’s presence in difficult seasons?

  3. Who has God placed in your life that may need your faithfulness, encouragement, or influence right now?

A Prayer For Purpose:

Father, thank You for being present in both the moments I understand and the ones I do not. When life feels uncertain, help me trust that You are still working in ways I cannot fully see. Give me faith like Moses’ mother, willing to trust You even when the future feels unclear. Remind me that where You have placed me is not random and that You can use ordinary faithfulness for purposes far bigger than I realize. Help me walk with confidence, knowing that You are holding both my present and my future in Your hands. Amen.
