5 Ways to Be the Church in a Time of Uncertainty

As COVID-19 is affecting everything in our world today, this is a perfect opportunity for everyone to be salt and light in our communities. Here are some tangible ways you can do that:

  1. Realize that others may be having a different reaction to all this than you. Speak with compassion to people who may be feeling a lot of fear and anxiety. We want to respond in a way that clearly demonstrates Christ’s love.

  2. Get connected to your neighborhood through the Nextdoor app and look for any needs that you can help out with.

    • Post things you are able to do for people, such as childcare, picking up prescriptions or groceries, or walking dogs.

    • Participate in the local Takeout Blitz to help support our local restaurants.

    • Tie a blue ribbon outside your business or home to show support for our local healthcare workers and first responders.

  3. Check with your neighbors and ask how they’re doing and if you can pray for/with them.

  4. People are fearful right now. Grab a few friends and do a neighborhood prayer walk. Pray for health, calmness, and a sense of peace for the individuals in each home you walk by.

  5. Pray. Here’s a brief list of some things we can be praying about right now:

  • Ask God, in His mercy, to stop this pandemic and save lives—not only in our communities but around the world, particularly in places that are unequipped medically to deal with the virus (Isaiah 59:1-2).

  • Pray for President Donald Trump, Governor Henry McMaster, and other government leaders—international, federal, state, and local—to have the wisdom to direct us in the best courses of action for prevention and care (Romans 13:1-4).

  • Scripture says—teach us to number our days carefully so that we may develop wisdom in our hearts. Pray that the Lord will give us wisdom in this moment of fear as the foundations of what we know are shaken, that others would realize how fragile life is and how real eternity is, and they would see their need to turn to God (Psalm 90:12).

  • Ask God to protect our missionaries and their families around the globe, using this global crisis to advance His gospel to the whole world (Mark 16:15).
