Why Should Christians Go To Church?
Most of us know how easy it is to fall out of a habit. Miss something once because life gets busy, then miss it again, and eventually what used to be a regular part of your life becomes occasional. That can happen with exercise, friendships, family routines, and even church.
For many Christians, gathering with other believers has gradually become less consistent. Some have replaced being part of a local church with watching services online or consuming Christian podcasts, books, and other content. Those resources can be helpful, and online church can be an important option when someone genuinely cannot attend in person. But Hebrews 10 describes something deeper than simply receiving Christian content. God designed the Christian life to be lived alongside other believers.
Hebrews 10:19–25 comes at an important turning point in the letter. After explaining what Jesus accomplished through His sacrifice, the writer turns toward how Christians should respond. Because of Christ, we can draw near to God, hold firmly to our hope, and help one another remain faithful.
Why Do Christians Need to Gather Together?
Hebrews begins with something remarkable: because of Jesus, we have direct access to God. Under the Old Testament system, the Holy of Holies was separated by a curtain, and only the high priest could enter once a year. When Jesus died, that curtain was torn from top to bottom. Christ had opened the way for people to approach God.
Our confidence before God isn't based on how well we've performed spiritually. Jesus made the way, which means we can approach God honestly and confidently because of what He has already accomplished.
That same relationship with Christ also connects us to His people. Hebrews describes believers as brothers and sisters, members of the same spiritual family. Christianity includes a personal relationship with Jesus, but Scripture never presents that relationship as an isolated one. We draw near to God while learning to follow Him alongside other believers.
How Does Church Help You Stay Strong in Your Faith?
Hebrews 10:23 tells us to hold firmly to our hope because the One who made the promise is faithful. The original readers faced pressure and discouragement that made abandoning their commitment to Jesus tempting. Their circumstances were changing, but God's faithfulness had not changed.
We need that reminder too, and sometimes we need to hear it from another Christian. There will be seasons when your faith feels strong and seasons when discouragement makes holding on harder. Being connected to a church places people around you who can remind you of God's faithfulness, pray with you, challenge you, and encourage you to keep following Christ.
Hebrews tells us to "stimulate one another to love and good deeds." That requires intentional relationships and regular interaction with other believers. We need people who will encourage us toward Jesus, and those people need us too.
What Should You Bring to Church?
It's natural to evaluate church based on what we receive. Was the music good? Did the sermon connect with me? Did someone talk to me? Those questions can quietly turn gathering with the church into something we primarily consume.
Hebrews gives us another perspective. When we gather, we have an opportunity to contribute to someone else's spiritual growth. Someone sitting near you may be grieving, wrestling with temptation, feeling discouraged, or wondering whether anyone notices what they're going through. God may have placed you there to encourage them.
That changes the question we bring with us on Sunday. We can come ready to worship and receive God's Word while also paying attention to the people around us. Who can I encourage? Who might need prayer? How can I help someone take another step toward Jesus?
The church is a community of believers helping one another remain faithful to Christ. That's why gathering matters. We need one another, and following Jesus means becoming an active part of the family He has given us.

Father,
Thank You for making a way for me to come confidently into Your presence through Jesus. Thank You that I don't have to earn access to You and that my hope rests in Your faithfulness.
Thank You also for giving me a family of believers to walk alongside. Help me value the church the way You do and resist the temptation to live my faith in isolation. Give me relationships that strengthen my faith, and show me how I can strengthen the faith of others.
When I gather with other believers, help me notice the people around me. Give me opportunities to encourage someone, pray with them, serve them, and point them toward Jesus. Help me become a faithful and active part of what You are doing through Your church.
