When We Ask: A Story of Healing, Faith, and Forgiveness

When Jesus healed the paralyzed man in Luke 5:17–26, it was more than a moment of physical restoration. It was a moment that revealed who He truly is and what we truly need. This powerful story shows us that Jesus offers more than we ask and meets needs deeper than we realize.

Why Did Jesus Forgive Before Healing?

The paralyzed man had one clear, visible problem—he couldn’t walk. His friends believed healing was his greatest need, and they did everything possible to bring him to Jesus, even breaking through the roof to get him there.

But Jesus looked past the surface and said, "Friend, your sins are forgiven." This unexpected statement shocked the crowd and angered the religious leaders. After all, only God can forgive sin. But that’s the point. Jesus is God. And He was showing the world that spiritual restoration matters most.

What Does This Teach Us About Our Real Needs?

The truth is, we often come to Jesus asking for help with what we can see—health issues, financial stress, family struggles. These things matter to Him. But Jesus wants to heal the whole person, and that begins with the heart.

By forgiving the man’s sins first, Jesus showed us that the root of our brokenness often lies deeper than we think. Forgiveness restores our relationship with God. It’s the miracle we need most.

How Did Faith Make a Difference?

The paralyzed man couldn’t get to Jesus on his own, but his friends carried him. Their faith was bold, determined, and creative. They didn’t let a crowd or a roof stop them. And Jesus responded to their faith by changing his life.

Are you bringing your friends to Jesus? Are you trusting that He can do what you cannot? Sometimes the breakthrough in someone’s life begins with your step of faith.

Which Is Easier to Say: "You're Forgiven" or "Get Up and Walk"?

Jesus asked a powerful question: "Which is easier to say?" Anyone can say words, but only God can make them true. To prove His authority, Jesus did both—He forgave sins and healed the man physically.

This visible healing confirmed the invisible miracle. And it left the entire crowd astonished. Scripture says they were filled with awe and declared, "We have seen remarkable things today."

What Does This Mean for You Today?

Do you feel stuck in a situation that seems impossible? Are you asking Jesus for help with something visible, while He is working on something eternal? The good news is this: Jesus sees your full need and is able to do more than you ask or imagine.

He is the Savior who forgives, heals, restores, and transforms.

Bring your needs to Him. Bring your friends to Him. Trust that He is working, even in ways you cannot see.

“Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine”
—Ephesians 3:20
