The Ins and Outs: What's Inside Your Heart?
What’s really going on inside you? That question may seem personal, but Jesus doesn’t shy away from it. In Luke 6:43–45, He gives us a clear and convicting image: every life is like a tree, and every tree is known by its fruit. In other words, what’s growing on the outside is rooted in what’s happening on the inside.
“A good person produces good out of the good stored up in their heart...for the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.” —Luke 6:45
It’s the perfect picture of the ins and outs—the inward condition of our hearts shaping the outward reality of our lives.
Maybe your words have surprised you lately. Maybe your reactions haven’t looked much like Jesus. Instead of brushing it off or saying, “That’s not who I am,” what if we let the Lord gently examine what’s been filling us? Because the truth is, our fruit never lies.
What’s Coming Out of Your Mouth?
We live in a world where we can curate our image, polish our words, and present the best version of ourselves. But Jesus pulls back the curtain. He says that the truest version of you isn’t found in what people see—it's what overflows when you're under pressure.
So here’s the question: What’s been coming out of you lately?
Are your words full of grace or criticism?
Do your actions reflect love or self-interest?
Are you producing fruit that looks like Jesus—or something else?
What's In Your Heart?
Jesus talks about the “good treasure” of the heart—a spiritual storehouse we’re constantly filling. If we’re pouring in His truth, His Word, and time in His presence, what flows out will reflect that. But if we let other things dominate our hearts, our fruit will reveal it.
And fruit always tells the truth.
The apostle Paul gives us a clear standard in Galatians 5:22–23. The fruit of the Spirit is:
love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
These aren’t things we fake or force. They grow naturally when we stay connected to Jesus.
Ready For a Check-up?
As you reflect on the ins and outs of your own life, ask:
What’s being stored in my heart?
What’s been coming out of my mouth?
Does my life reflect the fruit of the Spirit or something else?
When the curtain is pulled back, who you really are is what will be revealed. Let the inside match the outside—and let both be fully surrendered to Jesus.
