How to Talk to Kids About Heaven

by Tabitha Turner

While I was recently at Camp with our elementary kids, a few of them started asking some really great questions about God and heaven. They were curious—wanting to know what heaven looks like, what it feels like, even what it might sound like. Their questions led to one of the most meaningful conversations of the week.

I shared one of my favorite passages with them from Revelation 21:1–5, where John describes a new heaven and a new earth:

“God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more; neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

Even after hearing that, they still had more questions—so eager to imagine what heaven might really be like. It reminded me just how big and beautiful the idea of heaven is. Did you know heaven is mentioned more than 600 times in the Bible? There’s so much for us—and for our kids—to learn and wonder about.

If your child is starting to ask questions about heaven, here are a few simple ways to help guide those conversations at home:

Use Imagination

Ask your child to close their eyes and picture a place full of light, beauty, and peace—based on what we know from Scripture.

Draw or Paint Heaven

Let them draw what they think heaven might look like. It’s a great way for kids to express what they’re thinking and feeling.

Read the Bible Together

Verses like Revelation 21:21–25 describe golden streets and pearly gates—details that really spark imagination and conversation.

Talk About God’s Presence

Remind them that heaven isn’t just about some future day—it’s also about knowing God now. We can connect with Him through prayer, worship, and daily life.

Having these conversations at home helps kids build a strong, hopeful view of eternity—one that’s grounded in God’s Word and filled with wonder.
